The iPad has capped netbooks growth

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Remember when people were saying that netbooks would destroy the iPad?

Asustek Computer saw sales of its netbooks in the second quarter fall short of expectations mainly due to competition from Apple’s iPad, and has downward adjusted its target shipments for the third quarter, the traditional peak sales period, to 1.4 million units, according to company president and CEO Jerry Shen at an investors conference on August 13.

Because of decreased shipments of motherboards, notebooks and netbooks, Asustek’s financial performance for the second quarter declined on quarter. Asustek will continue to offer Eee PCs and will step into the tablet PC segment with its Eee Note and Eee Pad series, Shen pointed out.

Asustek has been gradually increasing outsourced production, with the proportion of total production expected to rise to 30% at the end of 2010 and further to 50% in 2011.

The iPad: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you…

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I stumbled across a few articles covering the iPad, and it reminded me of one of my favorite Ghandi quotes.

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Obviously Ghandi was working with things more important then tech, but the overlap is uncanny to the iPad’s situation.

“First they ignore you…” Microsoft’s strategy regarding the iPad.

“then they laugh at you” Microsoft talking about Apple’s platform.

“Then they fight you” Steve Balmer introducing the “Slate”. video embedded below.

“Then you win” Balmer quote on Apple selling a million iPads a month.

Ballmer said, “they’ve sold certainly more than I’d like them to have sold.”

Ballmer is on borrowed time at Microsoft.

Flipboard – A personal magazine designed for the iPad

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Because Flipboard uses your networks like this, the news is pre-filtered and it’s likely you’ll find far too much interesting stuff to read. I have one more piece of good news to pass along. Flipboard is free, and in the App Store right now. Actually, there is yet another thing to like: The promo video (above) is by Adam Lisagor, aka Lonely Sandwich (aka the guy from the Square ads). If that doesn’t sell you, nothing will.

iPad Competitors [infographic]

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

This infographic was commissioned by Courrier Japon Magazine in Tokyo and is based on the article “The iPad Changes Everything” originally published by Fortune Magazine. It illustrates the introduction of the iPad and how many devices in different markets are now finding themselves in direction competion to the power of the iPad and the Apps Store. All data was researched by myself, and the graphic was later split onto two pages to better fit the flow of the article.

It was published in the July 2010 Issue.
